A recent collaboration between Photo Start Southern Africa and Fountain of Hope showcased this mission in action, bringing photography and storytelling into a real-world setting where students could sharpen their skills and build confidence.
A Joint Effort for Community Impact
Language barriers can often be a hurdle in online learning, and Njeck’s cohort faced this challenge firsthand. Their trainer’s South African accent initially made comprehension difficult, but the interactive nature of the course—through assignments, visuals, and audio—helped bridge the gap. With the aid of an assistant volunteer from Pathfinder, students could repeat lessons in translation or discuss them in a familiar tongue, ensuring no one was left behind.
On Friday, the 27th, Photo Start Southern Africa partnered with Fountain of Hope to execute a holiday program in the heart of Paarl, South Africa. This initiative brought together key stakeholders, including South African Police Service, Groenheuwel Library, Heart NGO – Hillside, and DRK Community Services.
The event provided a platform for community engagement, education, and skill-building, ensuring young learners could apply their photography training in meaningful ways.
Alumni Success: From Student to Photographer
A defining moment of the event was when one of our own alumni, Jamel Jaftha, took center stage as an official event photographer. Guided by Uzair Appollis, our dedicated mentor and content creation trainer, Jamel confidently documented the event, bringing his storytelling skills to life. This full-circle moment exemplified what Photo Start stands for—creating opportunities for students to grow beyond their training.
Jamel was given a professional brief by the event coordinator and received support from Uzair to ensure he had everything needed to succeed. Though nerves were high at first, Jamel soon found his rhythm, capturing powerful images that not only aligned with the event’s vision but also told a compelling story. His final photographs reflected the depth of his learning, his keen eye for composition, and his ability to convey the spirit of the gathering.
