Having a Skill is an Opportunity Gained: Njeck Flora Eyen’s Journey

For many young learners, education is more than just acquiring knowledge—it’s about discovering opportunities that can shape their future. This was the case for Njeck Flora Eyen, one of the recent graduates from Pathfinder in Cameroon. Through a 12-week online course focused on Photography and Self-Expression, Njeck’s journey with Photo Start became a transformative experience.

Overcoming Challenges Through Learning

Language barriers can often be a hurdle in online learning, and Njeck’s cohort faced this challenge firsthand. Their trainer’s South African accent initially made comprehension difficult, but the interactive nature of the course—through assignments, visuals, and audio—helped bridge the gap. With the aid of an assistant volunteer from Pathfinder, students could repeat lessons in translation or discuss them in a familiar tongue, ensuring no one was left behind.

Mastering the Art of Visual Storytelling

From the outset, Njeck displayed a strong grasp of composition techniques. She approached each assignment with clarity, intent, and creativity. Her consistent efforts and willingness to experiment with photography allowed her to fully embrace the medium as a tool for self-expression and storytelling.

During graduation, students were asked how the Photo Start program had impacted them. Njeck did not hesitate to share her story. She recalled a past experience where she wanted to report on Spanish doctors visiting her local clinic. However, when she submitted her photos and articles, they were rejected due to poor image quality. This moment of disappointment fueled her determination to learn photography, and through Photo Start, she gained the skills to not only document significant events but also create meaningful visual narratives.

A Future Built on Skill and Purpose

For Njeck, photography is now more than just taking pictures—it’s a powerful communication tool. She envisions using her new skills to create awareness programs, enhance her social media presence, and document important community stories. But she doesn’t plan to stop there—Njeck is committed to teaching others, passing on what she has learned to empower more young individuals with the art of visual storytelling.

Her journey is already making an impact. On the final day of class, Pathfinder announced their first upcoming project: “The Struggles of Accessing Drinking Water in the Midst of Climate Change.” With Njeck as an alumna, there is no doubt that the project will benefit from her keen eye and storytelling abilities.

Njeck’s story is a testament to how having a skill can open doors to new opportunities. Her dedication to learning, her passion for storytelling, and her drive to create change are exactly what Photo Start aims to foster in every student. With her camera in hand and a clear vision in mind, Njeck is ready to capture the world—one impactful story at a time.
