He picked up a camera for the first time at just nine years old, and today, at sixteen, his journey behind the lens has led to an inspiring entrepreneurial initiative.
A Passion for Storytelling
Diyaa-Udeen has always been a natural storyteller. Whether through drawing, poetry, or comic strips, he found ways to express himself. However, photography introduced him to a whole new world of visual storytelling. The ability to capture a powerful moment in a single click fueled his passion and curiosity even more.
Finding His Niche
Years after his initial training in the Photo Start Photography & Self-Expression Curriculum,Diyaa-Udeen continued honing his skills. Attending a community event in Paarl, Cape Town, he brought along his camera, eager to explore new perspectives. Little did he know that this casual photo walk would spark a business idea that would not only provide him with an income but also help him fund his personal goals.
A Business is Born
While capturing the essence of the event, a parent approached Diyaa-Udeen, requesting a family photo and offering to pay for it. To his surprise, the parent was happy to receive the unedited digital image via WhatsApp. However, true to the values instilled in him by Photo Start, Diyaa-Udeen took it a step further—offering basic edits as part of his service.
Word quickly spread, and soon, other attendees lined up to have their photos taken. Charging just 5 ZAR per photo, his affordability attracted even more customers, with many offering generous tips for his work. Seizing the opportunity, Diyaa-Udeen marketed his photography services, drawing in even more clients and successfully funding the repair of his mobile phone.
Expanding His Reach
His entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. Following his success at the community event, he received an invitation to photograph a car show. Engaging with car enthusiasts and drivers, he showcased his growing talent and turned his passion into a sustainable venture.
