The second cohort of the Photo Start x Wikimedistas program in Bolivia is showing remarkable growth not just in photography skills, but in creativity, confidence, and visual storytelling.
Over the past two months, students have learned to make the most of what they have. With only their cell phones, they practiced using DSLR simulators, pro-camera apps, and hands-on exercises to improve technique. Their narrative abilities have also expanded: they now reference photographers, analyze images more deeply, and create small series that tell thoughtful stories.
Participation has stayed strong, with standout consistency and creativity from students like Mayli, André, Analuz, Helen, Elisa, and Jhoselin. The classroom is filled with objects, textures, and natural light has become an active learning space where students experiment, observe printed photos, paint on images, and give peer-to-peer feedback.
Challenges remain, particularly around equipment limitations and student schedules, but the group continues to move forward with enthusiasm. Their instructor, Noemi, plans to expand digital tools and deepen the social focus of photography next semester, helping students connect their work more closely to their community.
This cohort is not just learning photography they’re discovering voice, perspective, and the power of images to tell their own stories.
