In last year’s competition, we had the privilege of witnessing the incredible talent of Edward Wafula, a young photographer from Kibera, Nairobi, whose passion for visual storytelling captured the hearts of many.

Edward Wafula, a 24-year-old photographer from the slums of Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya, has always been passionate about art. A devout Christian, Edward loves working with children and dreams of using photography to inspire change in his community.
Edward’s Photography Journey
Edward’s love for photography began in childhood when his mother would hire photographers to capture family moments. Fascinated by the camera’s flash and the magic of printed photos, he developed a deep interest in the art. Although he once dreamed of becoming a pilot, his path shifted in 2015 when he interacted with tourists and photographers who introduced him to the world of photography. Through social media and mentorship, Edward honed his skills and grew into the visual storyteller he is today.
Edward captured his winning shot with a Canon 250D and a 50mm prime lens, demonstrating his technical skill and artistic eye.
Edward’s Winning Photo & Its Meaning
The image Edward submitted for the Photo Start Challenge holds deep emotional significance. It reflects childhood curiosity and the joy of simple moments—playing in the dirt, splashing in water, and finding a sense of refuge in the everyday environment of Kibera. The photograph captures the happiness of children washing their feet in small streams, a ritual that allowed them to return home clean after a day of play.
The Masterclass Experience with Asa Mathat
Edward’s prize included a masterclass with renowned photographer Asa Mathat, whose work has captured influential figures like the Dalai Lama, Warren Buffett, and Bill Clinton. Asa was impressed by Edward’s eagerness to learn and his ability to apply feedback instantly. The session covered:

- Composition techniques to enhance impact
- Practical skills for capturing light and emotion
- The value of a strong portfolio
Asa’s Advice to Aspiring Photographers
As AI advances in photography, Asa emphasizes that human connection remains the key to powerful storytelling. His advice to young photographers: Use every tool available, but strive to make your story unique. He also encouraged building a strong portfolio and leveraging digital platforms for exposure.
